Rear Admiral Jake Grafton, the hero of Flight of the Intruder, returns as the United States and Cuba engage in a terrifying game of brinkmanship, a gamble that could break the last military taboo and destroy both countries. In Cuba, an ailing Fidel Castro lies dying. Across the Straits of Florida, an anxious U.S. awaits the inevitable power struggle, determined to have a say in who controls this strategically invaluable island. And the American President has an added reason for concern an Arms Control Conference has just begun in Paris and, unbeknownst to either the American public or Cuba, the U.S. has hidden secret weapons inside the American base on Cuba's Guantanamo Bay. But no secret remains one for long, and when one of the Cuban factions finds out about the weapons, the excitement begins. Only Admiral Grafton, on an aircraft carrier off the coast of Cuba, knows the impending danger. Only Grafton can save America from a disaster that would make the Bay of Pigs look like child's play.

Cuba A Jake Grafton Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Stephen Coonts, Richard Gilliland, Phoenix Books Books Reviews

I couldn't put it down, lost some sleep but it was worth it. Great read
I am re reading all of Mr Coonts' books. They still remain immersive in detail and thrilling. His works are prescient Now on to # 8
Good story, loved his worked for a long time, but adds to much of his political prejudice in his writings. I wonder he will include the political circus we have today in his future writings.
I liked this book, however, it wasn't as interesting to me as the others in the series before it.
I wouldn't say It was a waste of time, it has some great characters and an interesting plot for the most part, but there were a few parts that seemed a bit confusing until you looked all the way back to the beginning of the book. I'm all about foreshadowing, but it was a bit excessive if you ask me... or maybe I just took too long to finish the book and forgot by the time I got there?

Still love Stephen Coonts!
This probably would have been a great book to read before history made the fictional events non-plausible. But it is still a good read for those who like adventure and political drama. Coonts has come a long way from his earliest books, doing a better job of developing characters and multi-dimensional plots.
Coonts does a very good job of writing, but over the years he's kind of "lost that touch" that he used to have when writing stuff like "Flight of the Intruder", etc. The best (non-fiction) book he ever did was "Cannibal Queen". But "Cuba" was something of a disappointment, I thought.
It was good to see Jake Grafton back in action. I think some fans will be disapointed because Jake has a bit of a reduced role in this book, Coonts lets a few new characters do most of the dirty work. I thought his use of Grafton was appropriate and refreshing, I mean how much can you really have the Admiral in command of a carrier task force sneaking around and shooting people in alleys.
I enjoyed this book more than the Red Horseman, which struck me as a bit simplistic, but that is just my opinion.
I don't know how to reconcile the story in Under Seige with what happens here, so I won't try to justify it, however, it certainly did not detract from my enjoyment of this book.
Was this book classic Jake Grafton? No, I don't know if I could put it in the same category as Flight of the Intruders or Final Flight. Was it good to see Jake Grafton back in action again? Yes, it was. I thought the writing was pretty solid, and although the bad guys weren't much of a match for Grafton and friends, they managed to throw more than a few curves. The subplots were interesting as well, and there were many interesting characters. Overall, it was an enjoyable book that I read all too quickly, wishing there were more of it to read.
Others have already covered the deficiencies in the story (the most glaring being the fact that Castro apparently is an immortal, since he's already died once before this book in the Grafton universe). Coonts' earlier works were much more enjoyable to read - it seems in these later Grafton books that he's running out of ideas - perhaps because Grafton was conceived as a fighter pilot - a role that a former fighter pilot like Coonts can write naturally. Not as much expertise went in to the post-flying career of Grafton, and we end up with stilted dialog describing a stilted aging man who has little of the spark that made the younger Grafton so appealing.

The most glaring problem in this digital edition which costs as much as the printed book is that it was obviously scanned in using Optical Character Recognition software. OCR software is not 100% accurate, and so a proofreader must read the scanned version and correct errors. This obviously didn't happen. It's a mystery to me why, in an age when all printed books begin life on a computer in the first place, we have to scan in books in the first place. Whatever the reason, typos of the magnitude found in this book make it difficult to read, especially when the word is so mangled that it's difficult to work out what it should actually be. An example "I tell you now, Maximo, you have no friends who wish to the with you." Based on the surrounding content, it's difficult to tell what "the" should really be, and guesses change the meaning of the line.

If we're going to be charged the same price as a print edition, it would be nice if we received the same quality standards.
