It differs from other Greek novels in positing an "alternate history" of the Trojan War, one in which the child Astyanax survives and is forced to relive the Trojan War in a time when the Golden Age is about to end. It is one of the grittiest evocations of the period, with the stink of manure as well as the gorgeous palaces. And pretty much everyone in the Iliad and Odyssey gets at least a cameo.
